The ground is dusty at their feet. In the background, the horizon fades into a milky-white fog. It is this dominance of the     <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">white <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that African American photographer Ayana V. Jackson confronts here, depicting \u201cStage Coach Mary\u201d\u2014or Mary Fields\u2014the first woman to work as a mail carrier in the United States. Following in the footsteps of what essayist Saidiya Hartman describes in her book <\/span> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">*Venus in Two Acts* <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">called <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201ca critical fabulation\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the photographer constructs, in the words of exhibition curator Mar\u00edsol Rodriguez, \u201c <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">images situated within archival absence and speculative presence\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The exhibition <\/span> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe Good News Is Not Proclaimed from the Mountain Tops but in the Clearings\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> thus restores a long-lost dignity to several Black figures forgotten by history\u2014horsewomen, Mexican revolutionaries, descendants of slaves. In other photographs, less triumphant but just as modest, Ayana V. Jackson captures moments of rest, as if weightless, for despite the upheavals of history, life, too, is made of grace and restraint. <\/span>   <\/p><p><strong>Ayana V.
